Pedlars
A pedlar's certificate is a certificate that allows a person to
trade (often selling trinkets, household goods and other hand made
objects) whilst on foot.
Pedlars must hold a certificate under the Pedlar's Act 1871 granted
by the police in the district in which they have resided for one
month prior to their application. A pedlar's certificate authorises
the holder to act as a pedlar within any part of the United Kingdom
and remains in force for one year from the date of issue. It can
only be granted to persons over the age of 17 years.
The appearance of the certificates differs from force to force, but
a pedlar's certificate issued by North Yorkshire Police will look
like this:

Pedlars are required to show their certificates to certain people on
demand, including anyone to whom the pedlar offers goods for sale.
Contact the issuing police force if you are not sure whether a
certificate is genuine.
Please note that having a pedlar's certificate is in no way an
indication that the goods for sale are of merchantable quality.
